How is Oud Made? The Journey of “Liquid Gold

Oud, often called “liquid gold” in the fragrance world, is one of the rarest and most luxurious perfume ingredients. But how exactly is this precious scent created? Let’s uncover the fascinating natural process behind oud production!


1. What is Oud?

Oud (also spelled agarwood) is a dark, fragrant resin that forms inside the heartwood of Aquilaria trees when they are infected by a specific mold (a type of fungus). This infection triggers the tree’s natural defense system, producing a rich, aromatic resin.


2. The Natural Process: From Tree to Resin

  • Infection: When the Aquilaria tree is wounded or infected by the mold Phialophora parasitica (or related fungi), it starts producing a sticky, dark resin to protect itself.

  • Resin Formation: Over time, this resin saturates the heartwood, turning the otherwise pale wood into fragrant, dark agarwood—what we call oud.


3. Harvesting Oud Wood

  • Trees infected with agarwood resin are carefully harvested, usually after decades of natural infection or through artificial inoculation methods used by growers to speed up resin formation.

  • The infected wood is then cut and sorted based on resin content and quality. The highest resin content means the most valuable oud.


4. Extracting Oud Oil

  • Distillation: The agarwood chips or powder are steam-distilled for several hours or even days. This process extracts the precious oud oil, a thick, dark, and intensely fragrant liquid.

  • Solvent Extraction: Sometimes, solvents are used for extraction, but steam distillation is preferred for the purest oud.


5. Oud Oil: The Final Treasure

  • The resulting oud oil varies in aroma and intensity depending on the tree species, region, age of the wood, and extraction method.

  • Oud oil is highly concentrated and expensive, often used as a key ingredient in luxury perfumes or sold as pure oil for direct application.


Why is Oud So Expensive?

  • Rarity: Only a small percentage of Aquilaria trees produce oud.

  • Time: It takes years, sometimes decades, for the resin to form naturally.

  • Labor-Intensive: Harvesting and distillation are complex and require expert skill.
